Welcome to GradSWE!

The Stanford Graduate Society of Women Engineers (GradSWE) is the graduate chapter of SWE that focuses on creating community of women across the School of Engineering. We focus on providing opportunities for professional development, community outreach, as well as social events. We welcome people of all genders and backgrounds that are dedicated to creating an inclusive and interdisciplinary network.

Connecting with Faculty

Our Faculty Roundtable Series allows students to meet different engineering faculty each month and promotes community-building for members interested in academia. Previous speakers have included the then Dean of Engineering Persis Drell, Professor Zhenan Bao, and Professor Audrey Bowden. Additional future events will further support for members in this area.

Mentorship

GradSWE’s mentorship efforts have a long history through Stanford’s Graduate Professional and Peer Advising (GP2A) program. Our participation in this program gives undergraduate students an opportunity to talk with graduate students and explore research opportunities, seek advice on preparing for graduate school, etc. We also coordinated a series of events to provide feedback and comments for early graduate students and senior undergraduates on their fellowship applications.

Networking

Our events offer a platform for professional and personal networking among both graduate and undergraduate students and alumnae across all engineering disciplines. As an example, we have organized events that bring together groups from multiple disciplines (e.g. MEWG, SWiFD and WEE) to discuss how to increase student involvement and how to create more collaborative events.

Outreach

Outreach remains an important area for the group, and GradSWE has been organizing lab tours for undergraduates since Winter 2016. These tours aim to help undergraduates learn more about diverse research areas and encourage them to seek research opportunities in labs of interest. These and related events enable us to give back to the Stanford community.

Professional Development

GradSWE hosts events to prepare students for careers in industry or academia through information-sharing and networking. Examples include collaboration with Stanford CareerEd to host resume building and interview prep workshops.

Community Building

GradSWE aims to create a strong community that supports each other through the graduate experience. As an example, weekly inter-organizational brown bag lunches give members a chance to step away from their workstations, have engaging discussions and meet students from other disciplines over informal lunches. Other potential events include hiking, fitness/yoga classes, painting, etc.
